Overview

About Marine Air Conditioning

Marine air conditioning is one of the most technically demanding systems on any yacht. Saltwater, vibration, dense engine-room heat loads, and continuous duty cycles place enormous stress on compressors, condensers, fan coils, raw-water pumps, and controls. As one of the earliest specialists in marine HVAC — going back more than half a century — Thomas Marine Systems has designed, installed, and maintained marine cooling on vessels of every class. We engineer chilled water (tempered) plants and self-contained direct expansion (DX) systems with an emphasis on serviceability, parts availability, and reliable long-term operation in the marine environment.

Section 01

Chilled water systems for larger yachts and superyachts

Chilled (tempered) water systems use a central plant of marine chillers to cool water that is circulated to fan coil units throughout the vessel. Tempered systems offer quiet operation, precise zone control, and the ability to scale cooling capacity to very large interior volumes. We design, install, commission, and service complete chilled water plants — including marine chillers, circulation pumps, expansion tanks, manifolds, balancing valves, fan coil units, digital thermostats, and BTU metering.

  • Marine chiller selection, sizing, and replacement
  • Chilled water loop design with proper balancing
  • Fan coil unit rebuilds and replacement
  • Digital thermostat and BMS integration
  • Glycol fill, flushing, and leak repair
Section 02

Self-contained DX air conditioning for sportfishers and motor yachts

Direct expansion (DX) self-contained units are the workhorse of marine cooling on sportfishers and mid-size motor yachts. We install current-generation Dometic self-contained units, perform retrofits of older systems into modern footprints, and service every common DX configuration in the South Florida fleet — including units that have been in continuous saltwater service for decades.

  • Self-contained DX unit installation and replacement
  • Retrofit of legacy units to current Dometic platforms
  • Variable-speed compressor upgrades for quieter operation
  • Condensate drain rework and overflow prevention
  • Air handler relocation and ductwork modifications
Section 03

Yacht AC diagnostics, troubleshooting, and emergency repair

When marine air conditioning fails the cause is rarely obvious. Symptoms like warm air, short cycling, freezing coils, or breaker trips can trace back to refrigerant charge, raw-water flow, sensor failure, electrical issues, or control logic. Our technicians follow a disciplined diagnostic process — verifying raw-water flow and condenser performance, measuring superheat and subcooling, testing electrical components, and confirming control inputs — to identify the actual root cause before parts are replaced.

Section 04

Preventive maintenance for marine cooling systems

South Florida's warm seawater and high biological activity are extremely hard on marine AC. Regular preventive maintenance is the single biggest factor in long equipment life. We offer annual and semi-annual maintenance programs that include condenser cleaning, sea strainer service, refrigerant verification, electrical inspection, controls testing, and a written condition report on every cooling component.
